An Interview with Gary Johannes

I practice from my busy therapy room in central Peterborough within easy reach of the city centre and main shopping areas.
How long have you been doing what you do and how did you get to become a hypnotherapist?
Prior to starting my own hypnotherapy clinic 2 years ago I had been working in personal development for a number of years, developing leadership skills in teams and individuals for a national business. To support this role I wanted to gain a greater understanding of how different people behaved in different circumstances which lead me to train in hypnotherapy.
As soon as I started my training I found I had a real passion for hypnotherapy and working one to one with clients to improve their wellbeing. Launching my own clinic has been one of my best decisions to date.
Who are your clients exactly?
My clients come from many environments with a wide range of issues and emotions, however they all have one thing in common: they have decided they no longer want to feel, behave or react the way they currently do. They often feel that they have lost or don’t have control of their emotions or habits and that makes them feel out of control in some area of their life.
What happens if you haven’t yet worked with someone in my position?
It is very rare that a client comes to me with a situation I haven’t come across. The truth is that although we often feel that the thing troubling us is unique and makes us feel alone and even sometimes a bit odd, I have to say this is never the reality. On rare occasions I may decide to refer on to another therapeutic discipline or a specialist hypnotherapist from within my network.
How are you different from other hypnotherapists?
I trained in a modern approach to therapy and hypnotherapy which is Solution Focused hypnotherapy. This is different because we work with how our clients want to be when their situation has change, we look to the future without revisiting the past.
What type of personality do you work best with and what is expected of me?
I work with all types of personality and as you can imagine many of my clients are struggling to be themselves, due to the emotions they are feeling, when they first visit me. This very quickly changes as we move through the sessions and they begin to regain control of how their behavior and feelings.
For what type of person will hypnotherapy NOT work?
There is no type of person that hypnotherapy won’t work for; however, you must have a desire to change and improve your situation. You must be willing to work with your hypnotherapist because this will enable you to make the change you desire.
What is hypnotherapy and how does it work?
Hypnotherapy is the term used to describe the use of hypnosis as a treatment method for various conditions and issues. Hypnotherapy works by directly accessing the subconscious mind and, in a therapeutic setting, creating a state of relaxation where the conscious mind becomes less active. When this occurs the subconscious mind becomes open and receptive to positive suggestion and reinforcement. Positive suggestions are integrated much more effectively than is possible while the conscious mind is alert.
It is through this process that subconscious belief systems, which govern our conscious decisions and behaviour, can be changed and negative beliefs, values, principles, and patterns can be altered. This process enables more positive connections to be created and reinforced, including establishing new ways of thinking and behaving and, subsequently, creating the basis of a much more positive, healthy and happy life.
Does it really work?

What results can I expect?
Results will be different for everyone as are the reasons for their visit to see us, most people find they experience significant results after just a few sessions, some may take a little longer. Clients who are willing to move their lives forward generally get results that affect them positively going forward.
Can I contact some of your former clients to see what it is like to work with you?
Due to the personal and private nature of the work we do, as well as our code of practice that prohibits us from sharing client information it’s not possible to speak to former clients. However some of my clients have been kind enough to give me a testimonial. You can read them here.
How quickly can I expect results?
That all depends on what you are looking to deal with and how you respond to the therapy. If you want to quit smoking then it’s normally one 2hr session, phobias you would normally need 3 sessions, however other issues like anxiety, depression, panic attack and the vast list of issues we can help with will vary from client to client.
How will we work together and what does treatment entail?
I offer a free 1 hour consultation for all new clients, this allows you to get a real understanding of how I work, how hypnotherapy will work for you and also it will give us an idea of how many sessions you may need. It also gives you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. At the end of that session you will be able to make an informed decision as to whether you would like to work with me.
How long is a course of treatment?
This will very much depend on what your issue might be and that will be discussed at your free initial consultation.
